COMPETENT SUPERVISION

A competent supervisor:

Applies the company’s Health and Safety Program:

  • Knows and understands all the elements of the Health and Safety program;
  • Promotes and enforces safety standards;
  • Understands Manager, Supervisor, and worker responsibilities;
  • Knows the regulatory requirements related to the work they supervise;
  • Overcomes the gaps between “what we say we do” about safety and “what we actually do.”

Conducts Inspections:

  • Understands the purpose and types of inspections;
  • Conducts inspections;
  • Prioritizes concerns;
  • Reports and follows up;
  • Sells recommendations to management and workers.

Conducts Investigations:

  • Understands the reasons for investigations;
  • Knows when to investigate;
  • Prepares for an investigation;
  • Understands legislation obligations;
  • Conducts investigations that determine the causes and result in recommendations to prevent recurrence;
  • Reports and follows up;
  • Sells recommendations to management and workers.

Conducts Training:

  • Understands reasons for training;
  • Provides on-the-job training;
  • Conducts effective safety meetings;
  • Plans and conducts training sessions.
