EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN
The Emergency Response Plan helps workers and employers to prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies.
A plan helps to:
Prevent or reduce causalities;
- Minimize property and environmental damage;
- Lessen financial loss.
A plan contains:
- A list of the resources available;
- An outline of the responsibilities of employees and external responders;
- Training needed to deal with emergencies.
To put together an Emergency Response Plan:
- Think of the emergencies that could affect your business (e.g. flooding, chemical leaks, electrical loss, wildfire, computer systems malfunction, etc.);
- Identify ways to plan for these situations;
- Set up an emergency response team with defined roles and responsibilities;
- Make sure all other workplace personnel are clear on their responsibilities in an emergency situation;
- Make sure the plan is known by external responders such as police, fire department, hospitals and utilities;
- Provide emergency response training;
- Identify and post evacuation routes;
- Buy emergency response equipment needed for your business;
- Post names of workers trained in First Aid;
- Post emergency phone numbers;
- Develop external and internal communication plans;
- Conduct drills and exercises;
- Plan for clean up, recovery and salvage.
- Develop general procedures for an emergency, plus specific procedures for each emergency.
- Review and update the plan based on the results of drills, changes in personnel or changes in the workplace.
