Writing an Occupational Health & Safety Policy
At the Basics level of CHOICES, you will need an Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) policy. For your convenience, we have included a sample policy that you can just download and customize to your needs.
If you want to create your own OH&S policy, here are some tips:
An Occupational Health & Safety Policy:
States the employer’s commitment to occupational health & safety. This is an important statement in that it guides all of the actions necessary for an effective safety program. It shows that the employer ranks safety equally with other principles in controlling the way a business is conducted;
Is created in consultation with workers or your health and safety representative or committee;
States the employer’s commitment to co-operate with workers on issues of health and safety;
States the respective roles and responsibilities of the employer, supervisors, and employees as well as contractors in carrying out their collective responsibility and implementing your actions for health and safety in the workplace;
States your health and safety goals;
States the actions you will carry out to support your goals;
Is posted in a prominent area (physically or electronically);
Is signed by the highest level of management;
Is dated, reviewed each year and updated as required.
