What is a Worker?
Only “workers” are entitled to receive compensation benefits. Others may purchase optional coverage.
Under the Yukon Workers’ Compensation Health and Safety Board, the following people are considered workers:
- people who perform services for an employer under a contract of service, which can be express or implied. It means there is a “master/servant” relationship between the worker and the employer;
- any person deemed by the Board or by regulation to be a worker;
- people who assist in emergency situations under the direction of an authority empowered to do so;
- registered apprentices in a recognized program;
- member of the Legislative Assembly;
- auxiliary members of a police force;
- people engaged in a work program or community service activities while serving a term of imprisonment in the Yukon, if the program or activity is conducted or designated by the Yukon Government;
- students engaged in a work-place training program, who are receiving a training allowance from Yukon Government
- people receiving disability insurance benefits in respect of unemployment caused by illness and who are engaged in a work-place training program directed by the Yukon Government.
