First line supervisor's certificate

Part 15 of the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations applies to all surface and underground mines and projects, including any mining development and exploration.

Any supervisor who supervises work at these worksites where there are 12 or more workers employed must hold a first line supervisor’s certificate (or where there are less than 12 workers and the board considers it necessary).

This is applicable to work activities in the Yukon for:

  • the supervisor(s) of open pits in a surface mine,
  • the supervisor(s) of underground operations in an underground mine, and
  • the supervisor(s) of drill operations at an exploration diamond drilling project

This certification is achieved through the successful completion of First Line Supervisor courses offered through Yukon University. These courses are aligned with Workplace Health and Safety Regulations and contain the information needed to become a certified First Line Supervisor in the Yukon’s mining industry.

To obtain a First Line Supervisor certificate, register with Yukon University – Continuing Education.

In the future, a first line supervisor’s certificate will be available at Yukon University for supervisors supervising activities in maintenance and process plant activities at mines. Any questions or concerns about accessing the training for First Line Supervisor certification should be directed to Yukon University.

First Line Supervisor's Certificate from other jurisdictions

The equivalent certification process permits people with valid First Line Supervisor certifications from other Canadian provinces or territories to have their credentials reviewed by WSCB to determine whether their credentials are acceptable in the Yukon.
