Legislation

The Workers' Safety and Compensation Board is governed by the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Act. Under the Act, workplace health and safety is regulated by the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations.

Workers’ Safety and Compensation Act

The Act came into force on July 1, 2022. It replaces the Workers’ Compensation Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The main purposes of the Act are to prevent workplace injuries and to care for injured workers.

Parts of the Act include workplace health and safety, compensation, appeals and offences.

You can find a copy of the Act under “W” in the legislation pages on the Government of Yukon website.

Workplace Health and Safety Regulations

The purpose of the Regulations is to promote workplace health and safety, and to protect workers and other workplace parties from work-related risks to their health, safety and well-being.

You can also find a copy of the Regulations in the legislation pages on the Government of Yukon website.

Health and safety codes of practice

Codes of practice are simple, practical guides to improving health and safety in the workplace. They expand on sections of the Act and Regulations to provide clear, documented guides.

Example

Code of practice 2006-01 expands on the matter of sanitary amenities in the workplace, which is covered by section 1.71 of the Regulations, “Sanitation and Accommodation.”

  • The section states, “Workers shall be provided with sufficient clean sanitary toilet facilities taking into account the nature of the work, the number of workers and the gender of the workers.”

  • The code of practice expands upon that requirement to describe precisely how many toilets are required, their design, and the quality of facilities.

You can find all our codes of practice listed below. We encourage workers and employers to read the codes relevant to them to ensure their workplace is safe and fully compliant with the Act and Regulations.
