This year’s Workplace Solutions event, “Fit for Duty: Practical Solutions for Substance Use and the Workplace” takes place on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, and Thursday, October 15, 2026. 

Our speaker this year is Dr. Melissa Snider-Adler, a board-certified Addiction Medicine physician, Medical Review Officer, and nationally recognized expert in workplace substance use, impairment, drug testing, and fitness for duty. When safety is on the line, employers and supervisors may struggle with tough questions: What does it actually mean to be fit for duty? How do I respond if someone seems impaired? When is drug or alcohol testing allowed? This keynote provides employers, supervisors and safety professionals with practical tools to handle these situations confidently.

The schedule of events is as follows:

October 14, 2026 – Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre

10:00 am-12:00 pm – Dr. Melissa Snider-Adler – Keynote speaker

  • In person at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre and via Teams. Following the presentation, lunch will be provided for in-person participants.

1:00 pm-4:30 pm – Bonnie MacDonald, Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA)

  • Mental Health Works: Building Confidence in Workplace Mental Health Conversations

  • By the end of this half day session, participants will be able to identify practical approaches to talking with an employee or co-worker who is experiencing mental health challenges using a CMHA-approved, evidence-informed approach.

1:00 pm-2:00 pm – Tyler Bowman, RN with Mental Wellness and Substance Use Services (MW&SUS)

  • Understanding Addiction in The Yukon: Risk, Resilience, and Workplace Support

  • This hour-long presentation will have participants learn about the Yukon Referred Care Clinic and what onramps and resources are available locally. You will learn what substance use disorder is, as well as risk factors and how the workplace can act as a supportive environment in someone's wellness and return to work.

October 15, 2026 – Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre

8:30 am-4:30 pm – Workplace Investigation Basics – Northern Safety Network Yukon (NSNY) training

  • This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to be able to analyze a basic worksite incident, determine incident causes, and complete an investigation report. Follow this link to register: www.yukonsafety.com/workplaceinvestigationbasics

Presentations take place in Whitehorse and are open to the public. We encourage employers, supervisors and workers to attend.
